Weyerhaeuser forced to close another mill

7 December 2006 — Federal Way (WA): Weyerhaeuser has permanently closed its veneer and plywood facility in Mountain Pine, Arkansas.

The company said that the closure will eliminate about 340 hourly and salaried positions and that affected employees will receive full pay for 60 days.

Steven Rogel, chairman, president and CEO, said: "As part of an ongoing strategic review of our businesses and against the backdrop of industry-wide market challenges for wood products, we have determined that this mill cannot be made economically sustainable.

He continued: "The closure of a mill is a difficult decision, but the reality of difficult markets requires that we allocate our capital with great prudence to ensure all manufacturing operations remain competitive and well positioned to serve our customers."
