3 February 2006 – Bentonville (AR): Wal-Mart has said that it will use a different method for calculating same-store sales.
Under the old method, Wal-Mart included only new stores in the comparison once the next fiscal year after their 12-month anniversary had started. As a result, stores were on average already 18 months old before they were included in the same-store comparison, the company said.
Under the new method (beginning with February’s results) Wal-Mart will include stores in the same-store comparison once they are open for 12 months, without waiting for the next fiscal year to start.
