Wal-Mart will begin opening smaller stores in the UK when its first Asda convenience store opens in Northampton, reports the Wall Street Journal.
The report adds that the foray into smaller stores is an effort to boost sluggish sales in a country where Tesco has leapt ahead of the competition while Asda’s profit and market share has remained stagnant.
Asda plans to build six small stores, called ‘Asda Essentials’, this year. They will measure 8,000 sq ft, and stock products at a lower price than rivals Tesco or Sainsbury’s, says the report.
