Wal-Mart explains sales blip

5 October 2006 — Bentonville (ARK): Wal-Mart has attributed its downward revision of September sales figures from 1.8 percent to 1.3 percent to computer coding errors.

In a statement, the company said: "There were approximately 235 Wal-Mart stores and Sam’s Clubs incorrectly coded for the calculation of the comparable sales estimate during the five-week reporting period. The 1.3 percent revised comparable sales estimate reflects the correction for these stores and clubs. Total sales were not affected."
