24 July 2006 — Helsinki (FIN): UPM’s Voikkaa paper mill and Kymi paper machine number seven have been closed down for the final time.
The closure of the mill ends 109 years of paper manufacturing on the site, which annually produced 410,000 tonnes and employed 650 workers
UPM has set up a redeployment and employee support programme to minimise the consequences of the closure. Salary payments to Voikkaa employees will continue until December 2006. The company plans to relocate 200 staff members within the company.
Customer orders and products were transferred to other UPM production lines earlier this year.
