30 August 2006 — London (UK): Tesco has launched a non-food home shopping service which aims to provide quicker and more efficient delivery.

The new Tesco Direct service will be operational online from 6 September. A catalogue featuring 8,000 non-food items, including office products, will be available two weeks later.

Tesco’s finance and strategy director Andrew Higginson said the aim of Tesco Direct is "to create a service that works to our customers’ timeframe, not ours". The new venture promises next-day delivery within a two hour time slot up to 11pm for smaller items such as kitchenware.

Last year Tesco.com made a profit of £56.2 million ($106.9 million).
