Strike ends at UPM Miramichi

22 August 2005 – Miramichi (CAN): The strike at UPM’s Miramichi paper mill in New Brunswick, Canada, has ended as members of Local 689, part of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers union, voted in favour of a new five-year labour agreement on 19 August.

The new agreement includes an 11 per cent wage increase over five years and pension improvements in line with the Canadian industry standard.

The paper mill will start up gradually with the first machine starting up in September and the second at a date yet to be confirmed.

About 700 paper and kraft mill employees had been on strike at the plant since December 2004.
