31 January 2007 — Hamburg (GER): Dr Susan Hennersdorf, managing director of Staples in Germany, has said that the company will boost operational, logistical and marketing synergies by opening new stores in the areas that it is already operating in.
Hennersdorf said that there are no plans as of yet to open stores in the new federal states of Eastern Germany. She said that this was due to existing potential in West German cities such as Hamburg and Cologne.
However, when speaking to Planet Retail, she did say that it is possible that company could enter the Eastern region in the medium-term in areas such as Berlin, Leipzig, Dresden or Magdeburg.
She also said that it is very unlikely that Staples will open stores in the formerly Communist states of Central and Eastern Europe due to low spending power and strict internal profitability guidelines.
