22 November 2005 – Cheshunt (UK): Trade journal The Grocer has claimed that UK supermarket chain Tesco is considering taking a 49 per cent stake in US food seller Meijer, in a deal possibly worth £2.5 billion ($4.3 billion).

The Michigan-based Meijer operates approximately 170 grocery and department stores in the Midwest region.

Tesco declined to comment on the speculation, but highlighted that CEO Terry Leahy had never ruled out a push into the US.
