Even though Amazon has a significant share of 25% in a European marketplace market estimated to be worth more than €200 billion ($215 billion), its share is actually falling.
As TFE.Agency Managing Director Bob Boekema says, this is not because Amazon’s sales are declining. On the contrary, but the overall channel is growing at an even faster pace, leaving 75% of relatively untapped opportunity to chase.
“Amazon’s market position differs heavily per market,” he notes. “Whereas it is dominant in the UK and Germany, it’s a ‘small play’ in countries such as Sweden, Poland and Benelux, especially in comparison with local leaders.”
He continues: “The long-term growth of marketplaces has been – and will be – in the double digits. What’s more, B2B marketplaces and initiatives such as procurement marketplaces are on the rise.”
