3M has launched an app to help users identify genuine disposable face masks.

The new Verify app identifies a bar code on the product packaging to determine whether the box is genuine. A positive result provides “a high degree of certainty” that it contains an authentic 3M mask. An inconclusive result means the package is either not recognised or a potential counterfeit. In this case, the app will give instructions for contacting 3M directly for further investigation.

The app is currently compatible with the following four products:

  • 3M Health Care Particulate Respirators and Surgical Masks, 1860 & 1860S, N95
  • 3M Particulate Respirator 8210, N95 (excluding the consumer packout version of this product)
  • 3M Aura Particulate Respirator 9330+, FFP3
  • 3M Aura Particulate Respirator 9332+, FFP3

The Verify app can be downloaded from Apple’s App Store and will be available for Google devices “at a later date”.

According to 3M’s website, between March 2020 and January 2023, it seized almost 60 million fake masks and filed more than 40 lawsuits related to counterfeit products.
