23 November 2005 – London (UK): US food seller Meijer has denied speculation of a possible takeover or joint venture bid by UK supermarket chain Tesco.
A spokeswoman for the Michigan-based firm told Reuters: "We have never held talks with Tesco, or anyone else. Meijer is a family-owned business and we have no plans to change that."
A report in trade journal The Grocer earlier this week claimed Tesco was ready to take a 49 per cent stake in the company for £2.5 billion ($4.3 billion).
