Jan/san and furniture give United big fillip

Strong sales of jan/san products and office furniture have helped United Stationers to post a profit rise in Q2.

The firm recorded net income of $21 million, or EPS of $0.62, compared to $15.1 million, or EPS of $0.46, a year earlier. Sales rose 1.2 per cent to reach $967 million. Sales growth was modest relative to the same period last year.

CEO Dick Gochnauer said: "We are increasing our focus on top-line growth in the second half. Our investment in category management and the introduction of a number of new marketing programmes should help position us to reach our objective of achieving 3-4 per cent sales growth for the rest of the year."
