IP to test cheaper fuel alternative

11 August 2006 — Albany (NY): A New York judge has rejected an attempt made by Vermont to halt a two week tyre burning test on Lake Champlain.

The test will allow International Paper (IP) to measure emissions from burning scrap tyre chips instead of costly fuel oil and wood scraps.

If emissions from the test meet safety standards, IP will be allowed to switch to the cheaper fuel source at its Ticonderoga paper and pulp mill, which the company claims is in jeopardy.

Vermont residents living downwind of the mill claim that during the test dangerous heavy metals and toxins will be deposited.
