HP investigation broke state law

8 September 2006 — Palo Alto (CA): Bill Lockyer, California Attorney General, has said that Hewlett-Packard’s (HP) internal investigation of its own board members violated state law.

The investigation that aimed to reveal the source of a media leak is said to have violated laws related to the illegal access of computer records and identity theft.

It remains uncertain whether criminal or civil charges will be made against the company.
