9 January 2007 — London (UK): Former OPI editors Bruce Ackland and Martin O’Rourke have launched Insider Communications, a public relations firm.
The business, which officially launches today, combines almost 30 years of media experience across a broad spectrum including office products, and aims to use "inside knowledge" of how the press works to help companies promote themselves.
Bruce Ackland, who was editor of OPI from October 2004 to June 2006, said: "The better PR companies tend to be those who have a deep and intrinsic understanding not only of the sector in which they operate, but also a comprehensive knowledge of the editorial process itself. The problem is that there are very few people in PR who have a background within editorial. We’ve been in the trenches, so to speak, and know what editorial want and when they want it. It’s a pretty unique proposition that we have on the table."
Martin O’Rourke, editor at OPI from August 2002 until October 2004, added: "While editors at OPI, both of us felt that, although there were some companies doing excellent work in the field of public relations in the industry, we also experienced some that fell short and didn’t really demonstrate a true understanding of how the press works and exactly what time-conscious and over-worked editors truly need. We feel that there is a significant gap in the market for a company such as Insider Communications."
