First Ride of Life celebrates success

Leading figures in the UK office supplies industry took part in a 100km cycling event in aid of The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR).

Durable UK Managing Director Sean Starkey and Safescan UK and Ireland General Manager Steve Robinson set up the event this year to tap into the increasing popularity of road cycling. After the success, they are hoping to turn it into a regular fundraiser, similar to its sister event, the long-established annual Climb of Life.

On 7 September, 28 riders set off from the ICR campus in Sutton, Surrey on two proposed routes. The longer 100km course took in the iconic climbs of Leith Hill and Box Hill, while a shorter, but still challenging 67km ride also included Box Hill, where much of the action of the 2012 Olympic road race took place.

The charity ride has so far raised over £12,500 ($16,200) for the ICR, with donations still coming in.

Starkey said: “I have been pleasantly surprised by how many of my friends and colleagues have come out of the woodwork as keen or aspiring cyclists. The support we’ve had has been overwhelming. We have had other colleagues, customers, manufacturers and people from the press join us. It’s fantastic that the event has been so well supported in its first year.”

Robinson added: “It has been an honour to be involved in this inaugural Ride of Life which has been a really exciting event. There was great camaraderie amongst our industry colleagues and friends, and to top it off, this has been an amazing fundraising effort by all involved.”

The cyclist’s effort will directly support the ICR’s scientists and clinicians.

Institute of Cancer Research Chief Executive, Professor Paul Workman commented: “Even as great progress is being made here at the ICR, there is still much more work to be done. All the money raised from the Ride of Life goes towards our vital research, so we can continue to study how cancer evolves and becomes drug resistant and find better ways of treating the disease.”
