17 May 2006 – Helsinki (FIN): Some 20,000 workers returned to work this morning, ending a two-day strike that had closed down most of Finland’s forest industry.
But as the workers returned to work, around 6,000 office workers in the industry started a 24-hour walkout of their own.
The strikes were in response to last week’s announcement by UPM-Kymmene that it will cut staff by at least 2,500 over a three year period and close some plants to increase profitability.
