Dell probes ‘exploding’ laptop

29 June 2006 — New York (NY): The Dell laptop computer seen online bursting into flames is being examined by company investigators.

The notebook apparently exploded during a conference in Osaka, Japan, earlier this month. The incident was first reported in tech news website The Inquirer last week.

Witnesses, who took digital pictures of the incident, said the laptop "was on fire and produced several explosions for more than five minutes".

Dell spokeswoman Anne Camden confirmed the company was investigating the incident and added: "We have captured the notebook… From here it’s going to be a very methodical and meticulous process to figure out what happened."

She claimed it was too early to establish the cause of the incendiary notebook but said the incident did not appear to be linked to a December 2005 battery recall due to overheating issues.
