13 December 2005 – Paris (FRA): China surpassed the US as the world’s largest exporter of laptop computers, mobile phones and other information and communications technology (ICT) devices in 2004, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
The independent economic forum funded by 30 countries said that China exported $180 billion (£101 billion) worth of ICT goods, compared with US exports of $149 billion.
OECD officials also said that China’s success was likely to continue in 2005, but data would take many months to collect.
