MPA sees Spanish market stagnation

Market research company MPA has published its fourth survey of the Spanish OP market and has exclusively released some of the results for OPI

As defined by MPA’s eight broad product categories, the Spanish office products market remained largely stagnant and increased only by 1.7 percent in value terms between 2006 and 2007 to reach r1.01 billion at manufacturers’ selling price (equivalent to r1.84 billion at consumer buying price).

Trends in OP distribution
In the contract stationer channel, the multinational players are well established in the Spanish market and expected to continue to grow. With an increasing purchasing power, smaller players find conditions difficult as they cannot compete on price and additional service offerings. E-commerce is becoming more significant in this channel with sales increasing hugely over the last three years.
The dealer channel is declining, and independent dealers will have to join dealer groups to increase their purchasing power to withstand the pressure from the large contract stationers.
Traditionally, Spanish customers prefer to buy their office products at local retail outlets situated in town centres. Out of town shopping centres, in other countries usually the preferred location for office superstores, are less popular due to many people relying on public transport.
The mail order channel is still slightly underdeveloped in comparison with other major European OP markets. Spanish OP buyers are used to making their purchases at retail outlets or with OP dealers with a more personal relationship. With the spreading of the internet, this attitude is slowly changing. Indeed 30-40 percent of OP sales in this channel are conducted via the internet, and internet sales are expected to grow further.
The full 161-page report offers a detailed insight into the current status and likely future prospects for all channels supplying the Spanish market, as well as an analysis of market drivers such as population and employment trends, IT developments and purchasing habits.
