1-to-1: Nick Severino

Name: Nick Severino

Job title: Executive General Manager, Merchandising

Company: Corporate Express Australia

Describe what you do in fewer than 20 words. Lead a passionate team of merchandising professionals who set out to make a difference everyday for our organisation.

If you weren’t doing your present job, what job would you like to be doing? A tour guide in Italy.

Your best piece of advice to a colleague? Never die wondering!

Your greatest strength? The energy and tenacity to finish a job.

The scariest travel experience you’ve had while in the OP industry? On the way to Paperworld in Frankfurt our plane was trying to land at Heathrow in one of the worst windstorms on record. We aborted the landing at the very last second, and the climb back up was the rockiest (and longest!) experience of my life – and all in dead silence.

What do you think will be the biggest single factor/issue affecting the OP industry over the next five years? The increasing awareness of customers and their ability to access information. Manufacturers and distributors need to keep finding ways to stay relevant and add value.

The biggest change that has taken place in the industry since your career began? The focus on sustainability and ethical sourcing. I am lucky to work for a company that’s an industry leader in that space.

Your childhood ambitions? I was cursed with early tooth cavities, so I wanted to be a dentist to try to change the process.

Your favourite office product? A paper clip – it helps keep your sheet together!

Your favourite movie, and why? A Few Good Men – we’ve all had to deal with a Colonel Jessep at some stage in our careers.

Your favourite holiday destination? Anywhere in Europe. I am always amazed by the history and culture.

Things that make you angry? People who don’t use the ability and talent that they obviously have.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I would like to be a better listener, and maybe a little taller – but that’s two things!

If you had to sing at a karaoke next weekend, which song would you choose and why? Imagine by John Lennon. It inspires a vision of what could be.

The best concert you have ever been to? I’ve seen U2 many times and each time I walk away euphoric.

Which character from a film or TV series do you think most resembles you? Jerry Seinfeld, because I have the same curiosity about everyday mundane things. n

How would you like to be remembered? As a person who tried to make a difference without compromising his values and integrity.

If the world had a President who would you vote for? Bob Geldof, for his vision in trying to use music to raise awareness for famine relief in Africa.

Any annoying habits? I talk way too much!

What is mankind’s greatest invention? Satellite navigation has made life so easy. Now I only get lost when I’m told to!
