1-to-1…

Describe what you do in less than 20 words.
Superstat is a dealer marketing group – our efforts are centred around helping UK office products dealers grow profitably.
If you weren’t doing your present job, what job would you like to be doing?
Sorting out the mess my home town football team seem to have got themselves into (Leeds United FC).
The best moment in your career?
I hope I haven’t had it yet. The best so far was without doubt the day I realised that Superstat could be a success.
The worst moment in your career?
Having to make some good hard working people redundant a few years ago.
Your best piece of advice to a colleague?
There is only one thing you have to do to get it right: Do what you say you are going to do.
What do you think will be the biggest single issue affecting the OP industry over the next five years?
Without a doubt it is the internet and a dealer’s ability to embrace and benefit from the opportunities it creates.
What’s your favourite movie?
The Butterfly Effect – I am fascinated with time travel.
What’s the biggest change you’ve witnessed since your career began?
I might be showing my age now, but the biggest change is computerisation and, of course, the internet.
What’s your most embarrassing industry-related experience?
Taking some members to a cricket match and having to leave after only one hour’s play. I will not bore you with the details, but it involved vodka, a plastic cup and a bet I should never have accepted.
What do you think has been the best innovation in the OP industry in the last two years?
e-Books. They do everything you need them to do and more, and at the same time they save trees.
What business book would you recommend as essential reading?
Any one that clearly describes the difference between mark up and profit. It is amazing how many people I come across who do not know this basic fact.
What do you like best about the OP industry?
To be honest, I think most of the products are pretty boring, but the industry itself is dynamic and full of surprises and opportunities.
What do you like the least?
People who always look for the negative in everything.
What’s your favourite office product?
Tea.
What was our first car?
A deep purple Morris Marina.
What was the first record you bought?
Black Sabbath’s Greatest Hits. I still listen to it today.
