The subject we can’t drop

When I was planning this issue’s content, my first thought was that we couldn’t cover Amazon again. But the reality is that Amazon’s onward march into the OP space really is the ‘hot topic’ right now. Even if same-day delivery isn’t on the cards today, its not-so-subtle shift to go after the B2B market has many speculating about what’s coming next, not just in the US.

SP Richards’ CEO Wayne Beacham said at the wholesaler’s conference in July that it is no longer a case of the ‘big three’ in the US but the ‘big five’; Staples, ‘Max and Depot have been joined by WB Mason and, of course, Amazon. As when the big boxes first arrived, we’re seeing a new dawn in the fight for market share – not forgetting that many independents are storming ahead, which Beacham also highlighted.

Talking of storming ahead, I’m extremely proud of my country right now for the London 2012 Olympics. As hosts not only did our athletes excel, but we did a great job of welcoming and celebrating with all the visiting nations. There’s a lot to be said for a bit of bonding between countries, particularly as the global economy continues to shake us all. We could all take a leaf out of the organisers’ book when it comes to international cooperation – perhaps as the industry takes on Amazon across the globe.

On another note, I decided to share this photo with you of the OPI team doing some valuable team bonding while over the pond. Any caption ideas? I’m thinking of the cover of a rather famous Beatles album…
