2019 NEW ENTRY: At a time when retail is having a tough time and negative press is much more common than good news, 125-year-old UK-based Ryman is a stationery retailer that continues to do well.
With Theo Paphitis the well-known and outgoing Chairman and face of the Theo Paphitis Retail Group (TPRG), Group CEO Kypros Kyprianou is lesser known. He describes himself as the quiet one, sitting in the back of the office crunching the numbers and working on day-to-day strategy and operations.
Kyprianou began working for TPRG – of which Ryman is a part – in 2004 and has been instrumental in the retailer’s success and ongoing developments over the past 15 years. With about 200 stores and 2,000 employees, Ryman is an omnipresent sight across the country.
Brand-orientated and with a real focus on generating and maximising customer footfall in its stores, Ryman offers many services that a modern omnichannel operator typically provides – an online offering, click-and-collect and two-hour delivery service, to name but a few. At its core, however, it remains a retailer that caters for a specific type of customer, with specific – and largely traditional – product needs in specific locations.
