Giving something back
This year's City of Hope honouree, 3M's Dr Jack Truong, talks about the cause the US office products industry has made its own
Over the course of a globetrotting career that has found him in New York, Paris and Bangkok among other locations, 3M's Jack Truong, VP, Office Supply Division, has defined excellence.
A chemical engineer by training, he holds 11 US patents. Since joining 3M in 1989, he has steadily gained positions of increasing responsibility. Truong is currently in charge of 3M's office supplies business worldwide. That enterprise has operations in more than 60 countries and sells products in nearly 200 countries.
It's a lot for anyone to have on his plate. But Truong also finds time to devote to philanthropy. Since 2004, he has served on City of Hope's National Office Products Council, an alliance of corporate leaders dedicated to supporting City of Hope's mission. In recognition of Truong's leadership in business and philanthropy, he will receive City of Hope's National Office Products Industry 2009 Spirit of Life Award.
"I'm proud to stand as this year's Spirit of Life honouree," Truong said. "Our industry's partnership with City of Hope puts our compassion into action to help save lives worldwide. City of Hope's impact has that kind of scope."
Guided by compassion and a patient-centric philosophy, City of Hope is a leading research and treatment centre for cancer, diabetes and other life-threatening diseases. Their research and treatments advance care throughout the nation. They are one of 40 National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Centers nationwide and rank as one of 'America's Best Hospitals' in cancer and urology by US News & World Report. City of Hope's goal is to save more lives by creating better treatments more quickly and to prevent cancer altogether.
A partner for life
For 26 years, the office products industry has partnered with City of Hope, raising a total of $70 million for research, treatment and education dedicated to eradicating cancer and other life threatening diseases. Later this year, one more landmark of the office products industry's commitment will see the light of day, when the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center for Cancer Immunotherapeutics and Tumor Immunology opens its doors.
The third floor will house the National Office Products Industry Cellular and Tumor Immunotherapies Center. There, researchers will develop more effective and gentler treatments that harness the body's natural defences to fight cancer.
Led by Truong and his 3M team, Inspiring Life is this year's National Office Products Industry fundraising initiative. The industry's fundraising efforts have already raised over $3.5 million. The industry kicked off its 2009 fundraising year with a visit to City of Hope's campus in Duarte (CA) on 24 February.
A group of approximately 60 industry leaders attended the latest in a series of annual tours that officially begin the year's fundraising activities. During the February visit, these leaders saw first hand the innovative work being done at City of Hope.
During their morning on campus, the group met with several City of Hope physicians and researchers. Dr Robert Figlin, holder of the Arthur and Rosalie Kaplan Chair in Medical Oncology, gave a presentation on the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center for Cancer Immunotherapeutics and Tumor Immunology. Dr Karen Aboody, Assistant Professor of Hematology & Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation, gave an overview of her work with stem cells.
A presentation by Dr Andrew Raubitschek, Chair of Cancer Immunotherapeutics and Tumor Immunology, focused on his department's activities. David Josephson, MD, Clinical Assistant Professor of surgery, talked about prostate cancer treatment and robotic surgery.
Later in the day, 2009 Spirit of Life honouree Truong addressed his fellow industry leaders, and Dr Michael Friedman, City of Hope's President, gave an institutional overview.
"To make this year's Inspiring Life initiative a success, there are a number of ways you can contribute and participate. Attend one of our fundraising events. Spread the inspiration by engaging your colleagues in an employee-giving programme," encouraged Truong.
"Develop cause-marketing promotions for your product lines and brands. Or you may have your own, innovative ideas and let your creativity be your guide."
A cocktail reception and dinner at Pasadena's Langham Huntington Hotel and Spa featured Ron Shaw, Chair of the National Office Products Council, Natalie Schnaitmann of the Sheri & Les Biller Patient and Family Resource Center, and patient speaker Jamie Fellowes. According to the visiting executives, they had a great time learning about City of Hope while getting the opportunity to network with a small group of their peers.
Truong, who resides in St Paul (MN) with his wife and their three children, has consistently mobilised innovation to benefit City of Hope.
In 2004, he championed a successful (and ongoing) promotion at 3M, called 'Stick Up for the Cause' in which 50¢ of sales from each specially- marked 3-pack of Post-it Super Sticky and Post-it Pop-Up Notes and Dispenser went back to City of Hope for breast cancer research and awareness. Another 30¢ from the sale of specially-marked packs of Post-it Flag Highlighter Pens also benefited City of Hope. The programme has raised more than $1 million in five years.
Early this year, 3M also participated in a direct mail corporate matching gift programme which ran for less than two months and raised over $475,000 for City of Hope. Through the programme, 3M matched donations dollar-for-dollar up to $100,000.
Starting on 16 June through to 31 August, Post-it brand will match donations to City of Hope, dollar-for-dollar, up to $100,000 from all consumers, worldwide. (Please visit www.cityofhope.org/NOPI to donate.)
For the 2009 Inspiring Life fundraising efforts, Truong has his eyes on international horizons. He has worked to garner awareness and support for City of Hope from 3M's business segments and partners around the world. Then again, that's a fitting approach for a leader with 3M, a worldwide company, in aid of City of Hope, an organisation that fosters scientific and medical advances worldwide.
